What does IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0 mean?

5 min read · Updated 7 October 2026

It means you need at least 6.5 overall and at least 6.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You have to meet both conditions.

You don't need 6.5 in every skill. A 6.0 in one skill is fine, as long as your overall score reaches 6.5 and none of the four falls below 6.0.

This is a real and common requirement. The University of Toronto's undergraduate admission page, for example, sets exactly this for IELTS Academic, and so does Trinity College Dublin for most of its courses.

The two checks to make

First, look at your overall band. Is it 6.5 or higher?

Then look at each skill. Are all four 6.0 or higher?

If the answer to either is no, you haven't met the requirement. The score requirement checker does both checks for you and tells you which skill to raise.

Scores that meet or miss it

These made-up profiles are checked against 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. They aren't admission decisions.

ListeningReadingWritingSpeakingOverallMeets it?
7.07.06.06.06.5Yes
7.07.05.56.56.5No: Writing is below 6.0
8.08.05.56.57.0No: Writing is still below 6.0
6.06.06.06.06.0No: the overall is below 6.5
7.06.56.06.56.5Yes

The third row catches people out. 7.0 overall is higher than the 6.5 asked for, but Writing 5.5 still misses the minimum. Raising Listening or Reading further would not fix it.

How the overall band is calculated

IELTS averages your four scores and rounds to the nearest whole or half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band (official IELTS scoring guidance).

For example: Listening 7.0 + Reading 6.5 + Writing 6.0 + Speaking 6.5 = 26.0. Divide by four and you get 6.5 overall.

The skill minimum is a separate condition set by the university or organisation receiving your result. The overall calculation doesn't remove or change it. To try other combinations, use the band score calculator.

6.5 overall, with 6.5 in WritingWriting has its own minimum; read the rest for the other skills.

For instance, Cardiff Metropolitan has a category with 6.5 overall, 6.5 in Reading and Writing, and 6.0 in the other two. That's stricter than 6.0 across all four.

What if one band is too low?

Check your course's policy before deciding what to do. Ask whether it accepts One Skill Retake, an English pathway or another qualification you already hold. If the wording is unclear, send admissions your full score profile and ask them to confirm.

If Writing is the missing band, read IELTS 6.5 overall but Writing 5.5 for the next steps. For examples across destinations, see IELTS score requirements by country.

When you're ready to practise, the essay checker shows where a Task 2 essay loses marks. Its estimate is for practice, not an official result or your complete Writing score.
