IELTS Writing band descriptors, in plain English

What examiners look for in Task 2 at each band from 5 to 9. Every criterion comes with an example at that band, all answering the same question, so you can see what changes.

Every example answers

Some people believe university education should be free for all students. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Task Response · band 7

Did you answer every part of the question, with a clear position and ideas you actually develop?

  • The main parts of the question are answered.
  • Your position is clear and developed.
  • Ideas are explained and supported, but some support is too general or drifts from the point.
“I agree that university education should be free because it gives everyone the same chance. For example, students from poor families would not have to worry about debt.”
A clear position with a reason and an example, but the support stays general.

To reach band 8: Make support specific: replace general claims with a concrete reason, result or example that proves your exact point.

Coherence and Cohesion · band 7

Can the reader follow your ideas easily, paragraph to paragraph and sentence to sentence?

  • Ideas are logically organised and clearly progress through the essay.
  • A range of linking words and references are used, with some over- or under-use.
  • Each paragraph has a clear focus.
“Free tuition would allow more students to attend university. However, this would cost the government a lot of money, so taxes might need to rise to pay for it.”
Logical order and correct linkers, though the connections are fairly standard.

To reach band 8: Use reference words (this, these, such, which) to connect ideas, and keep linkers for where the logic actually turns.

Lexical Resource · band 7

Do you use a range of words precisely and naturally, with few spelling or word-form mistakes?

  • Enough range to be flexible and fairly precise.
  • Some less common words and phrases, with awareness of style and collocation, though some choices are off.
  • Only a few spelling or word-form errors.
“Removing tuition fees would make higher education more accessible to students from poorer backgrounds.”
Topic vocabulary that fits (“accessible”, “poorer backgrounds”), without strain.

To reach band 8: Learn words in natural pairs and phrases (collocations) for common topics, and use them where they fit exactly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy · band 7

Do you use a variety of sentence structures, and how accurate are they?

  • A variety of complex structures, used with some flexibility.
  • Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, with frequent error-free sentences.
  • A few errors may remain, but they do not get in the way.
“Although free tuition would be expensive, it would allow students who cannot afford fees to study subjects that interest them.”
Complex and correct; the range is solid rather than ambitious.

To reach band 8: Make the majority of sentences error-free, and vary structures naturally (conditionals, relative clauses, passives) where they suit the point.

Band 6 to band 7: what changes

The jump from 6 to 7 is where most learners get stuck. It comes down to one change in each criterion.

  1. 1

    Task Response

Keep one clear position all the way through, and explain every main idea with a reason and an example instead of stating it.

  2. 2

    Coherence and Cohesion

Give each body paragraph one main idea in its first sentence, and choose each linker for the relationship it shows (contrast, result, addition).

  3. 3

    Lexical Resource

Replace your most repeated plain words with more precise ones that fit the meaning, and check that each new word is used naturally.

  4. 4

    Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Get your complex sentences right: check joining words (although, which, who) and keep one clause per linker.

How the criteria become a band

Each task is marked on four criteria, each worth a quarter of that task’s score. Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 toward your Writing band. To be placed at a band, an essay has to fit everything that band describes, and some weaknesses hold a score down on their own: a part of the question left unanswered, or missing paragraphs.

Practise with the Task 2 question bank, check length with the word counter, and work out the Writing band you need with the band calculator.

What each Writing band means

Questions

What are the four IELTS Writing criteria?

Task Response (did you answer the question and develop your ideas), Coherence and Cohesion (can the reader follow you), Lexical Resource (vocabulary) and Grammatical Range and Accuracy (grammar). Each is worth a quarter of the score for that task.

What is the difference between band 6 and band 7 in Writing?

At band 6 ideas are relevant but not explained enough, linking words are often mechanical, vocabulary is plain and complex sentences carry errors. At band 7 the position is clear and developed, ideas progress logically, word choice is more precise, and error-free sentences are frequent. The section above lists the change for each criterion.

Are the examples on this page official?

No. They were written by MyBandPrep to show what each band describes, all on one question so you can compare them. The descriptions are a plain-English summary of the public IELTS Writing band descriptors (updated May 2023), not the official wording. A real essay's band depends on the whole essay, never on one sentence.

Are the descriptors the same for Task 1 and Task 2?

Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy are described the same way. The first criterion differs: Task 1 is marked on Task Achievement (reporting the key features or covering the bullet points), Task 2 on Task Response. Task 2 also counts twice as much toward your Writing band.
