IELTS Writing One Skill Retake: check acceptance before you book

Your Listening, Reading and Speaking scores are where they need to be. Writing is the one holding up your application, and sitting the whole test again feels like a lot when only one score needs to change.
IELTS Writing One Skill Retake lets eligible candidates take the Writing test again without repeating the other three skills. Before booking, check that your university accepts the result and that you meet the eligibility rules (official IELTS One Skill Retake guidance).
Settle university acceptance first. A valid retake result won't help if the university needs scores from a single full test.
Which universities accept One Skill Retake?
Examples from official admission pages, checked on 7 October 2026:
| Institution and scope | Published position | Source |
|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto, undergraduate | Does not accept One Skill Retake results. | English requirements |
| Monash University, general admission | Lists IELTS Academic One Skill Retake among accepted tests. | English requirements |
| University of Auckland, undergraduate | Accepts One Skill Retake; programme scores must still be met. | Undergraduate English requirements |
| University of California, first year | Does not accept One Skill Retake. | English proficiency requirements |
Treat the table as a starting point and confirm the current position for your course and intake, especially for programmes with their own admissions policy. If you can't find a clear answer, send admissions a short question:
I am applying for [course] for [intake]. My IELTS Academic scores are Listening [score], Reading [score], Writing [score] and Speaking [score]. Does this programme accept an IELTS Writing One Skill Retake result to meet its English requirement?
If you're applying to several universities, ask each one. One university's answer doesn't tell you what the others will do.
Who is eligible?
IELTS says you must have taken an eligible full IELTS on computer test at a centre that offers One Skill Retake. You must sit the retake within 60 days of the original test, and you get one retake per full test. Booking within 60 days isn't enough if the retake date itself falls outside them (IELTS eligibility rules).
Check availability with your original provider. IDP, for example, says a retake after an IDP test must be at an eligible IDP centre, though it can be a different location (IDP's One Skill Retake guidance).
If you took the Writing on Paper option, ask your centre about eligibility. IDP says a Writing on Paper retake must use the same Writing mode as the original test (IDP's Writing on Paper guidance).
Do you retake Task 2 only?
No. You retake the whole Writing test, both tasks.
One Skill Retake keeps the format and timing of the skill. For Academic Writing that means 60 minutes with Task 1 and Task 2, and Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1 (IDP's format guidance, official Academic Writing format).
If your practice has been almost all essays, make room for Task 1 before the retake. The Task 1 guide covers every chart type, and the time management guide covers splitting the hour.
What happens to your results?
IELTS issues a new Test Report Form with your retake score and your original scores for the other three skills, and you choose which report to use. IELTS gives a results turnaround of three to five days for One Skill Retake (official results guidance).
Allow time for the university's own processing too. The day you receive a result and the day admissions can verify it may not be the same.
The retake fee depends on where you take it. Ask the centre for the current price before comparing it with a full retake; IELTS fees by country lists both for some countries.
One Skill Retake, re-mark or full retake?
These options do different things:
| Option | What happens | What to find out first |
|---|---|---|
| Writing One Skill Retake | You take a new Writing test. | Eligibility, university acceptance, time to prepare. |
| Enquiry on Results | Your original answers are re-marked. | Deadline, fee, and whether the timing fits your admission deadline. |
| Full IELTS retake | You take all four skills again. | Accepted test version, dates, and readiness in all four skills. |
IELTS says an Enquiry on Results is handled by senior examiners, the fee is refunded if your band score changes, and the result can take up to 21 days. It doesn't promise an increase (IELTS re-mark guidance).
Decide from your actual situation. If the university doesn't accept One Skill Retake, rule it out early. If you think your original Writing was marked too low, ask about an Enquiry on Results. If you need another test, give yourself enough time to fix what held the first result back.
Preparing for a Writing retake
Start with one full, timed Writing session and look at where it goes wrong. Perhaps Task 1 takes too long, part of the essay question goes unanswered, or you finish without checking the sentences you weren't sure of.
Pick one problem and work on it deliberately. For Task 2 that might be planning before you write, developing one body paragraph properly, or hunting down a grammar error you repeat. Then test the change in a fresh timed answer.
The essay planner helps you organise a Task 2 answer, the essay checker gives an estimated band with the sentences to fix, and each Task 1 sample lets you write your own answer and check it. These support practice; they don't predict your retake result.
Policies checked on 7 October 2026. Confirm eligibility with your test provider and acceptance with every university you're applying to.
