Can WAEC or WASSCE replace IELTS for UK university admission?

6 min read · Updated 7 October 2026

Yes, some UK universities accept WAEC or WASSCE English as evidence that you meet their English requirement. Whether yours is accepted depends on the university, the course, your grade and any conditions attached.

If you already have a qualifying result, checking before you book IELTS could save you the cost of a test you don't need for admission.

But a university appearing on a "study in the UK without IELTS" list isn't enough. You need to know whether it accepts your result for your course.

WAEC and WASSCE: what the names mean

WAEC is the West African Examinations Council. WASSCE is the West African Senior School Certificate Examination it runs, so when applicants say "my WAEC result" they usually mean their WASSCE result (WAEC's explanation of WASSCE).

Check the name on your certificate against the qualification the university lists. For the English requirement, the grade that matters is usually your English Language result, not your average across subjects.

The Leeds Beckett exception is a good reason to look beyond the grade. A C6 doesn't mean every course at that university will accept it.

Does English C6 mean you can be admitted?

It may meet the English requirement where the university accepts it. It doesn't mean you meet the academic entry requirements for the degree.

Those are separate checks. A university may accept your English grade but still require a foundation course or another qualification for academic entry. Portsmouth's Nigeria page, for example, covers foundation entry with school qualifications separately from its English requirements (Portsmouth's Nigeria guidance).

Keep two notes for each course: one for academic eligibility and one for English evidence. That makes it easier to ask the right question when the application page is unclear.

Can you use WAEC for a UK Student visa too?

Ask the university how it will assess and record your English for the visa. Don't assume the admission policy answers every visa question.

For degree-level study, the UK government says a higher education provider can assess your English itself, as long as the level is equivalent to CEFR B2. Confirm with your sponsoring university what evidence it will accept in your case (UK Student visa English guidance).

Foundation and pre-sessional routes can have different conditions. Leeds Beckett, for instance, lists a separate IELTS requirement for foundation courses on its Nigeria page (Leeds Beckett's entry requirements).

What to send admissions

Give the university enough detail to confirm your result, rather than just asking whether it accepts WAEC:

  • Your course and intake.
  • The qualification name, country and exam year.
  • Your English Language grade.
  • Your application number, if you have one.

Ask which documents and verification details it needs. If your result is older, ask whether the university applies an age limit to it. Don't assume a rule for IELTS also applies to WAEC, or that another university's policy applies to yours.

A message you can adapt:

I am applying for [course] for [intake]. I hold a [qualification] issued in [country] in [year], with [grade] in English Language. Can this result meet the English requirement for my course? Please confirm any verification documents you need, and whether a separate English test is required for my entry route and visa sponsorship.

Send it yourself or ask your adviser to get the answer, and keep the written reply with your application documents.

Applying for an undergraduate course through UCAS? Your personal statement is now three short answers; the UCAS personal statement guide explains what to put in each, including how to describe a WAEC curriculum to UK admissions staff.

What if your university doesn't accept your result?

Find out why before choosing a next step. Your grade may be below the level needed, your course may have a higher English requirement, or your entry route may need a different qualification.

If you need IELTS, get the exact requirement in writing: test version, overall band, minimum for each skill and deadline. IELTS score requirements by country shows how to read these conditions, and what "no band below 6.0" means explains skill minimums.

For Writing, start with the essay planner or write a Task 2 answer in the essay checker for an estimated band and the sentences to fix. It's a practice estimate, not an official IELTS result.

If the university confirms your qualification is enough, keep that confirmation, follow its document instructions, and move on to the rest of your application.
