General Training Task 1

IELTS letter checker

Paste any letter task and your letter. Get an estimated band for all four criteria, with each bullet point, your tone, the greeting and sign-off, and the sentences to fix checked.

Your letter

Then get an estimated band, with checks on every bullet point, your tone and the letter format.

The task

Include the bullet points and the “Begin your letter” line if you have them: the checker uses them to check coverage and tone.

Three things that decide a letter’s band

  • Every bullet point, developed. One paragraph for each, with a detail or a reason, not one line.
  • A clear purpose in the first sentence. The reader should know at once why you are writing.
  • The right tone, all the way through. Formal, semi-formal or informal, depending on who you are writing to.

The complete letter guide covers all three, and the model letters show them in practice.

Questions

How is a General Training letter marked?

On the same four criteria as every IELTS Writing task: Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. For a letter, Task Achievement asks whether every bullet point is covered and developed, whether the purpose is clear, and whether the tone suits the reader and stays consistent.

What happens if I miss a bullet point?

The official descriptors place a letter that does not present all the bullet points at band 4 for Task Achievement, however good the rest is. Covering all three with some detail is the first thing to get right, so the checker lists each bullet and whether you covered it.

Formal, semi-formal or informal: how do I know?

From who the letter is to. Someone you don’t know, or a company, needs a formal letter (“Dear Sir or Madam … Yours faithfully”). Someone you know by name but not as a friend, like a landlord or a manager, needs a semi-formal one (“Dear Mr Hughes … Yours sincerely”). A friend gets an informal letter (“Dear Anna … Best wishes”).

Can I paste a task from a book or another website?

Yes. Paste the situation, the bullet points and the “Begin your letter as follows” line if there is one. The checker reads the bullets and the greeting from the task, so it can check coverage and tone.

Is the band an official IELTS score?

No. It is an estimate based on the public band descriptors, from three independent readings of your letter. It shows where you are and what to fix; only an IELTS examiner gives an official band.
