IELTS score requirements by country: overall and Writing minimums

If you're planning to study abroad, you probably want a clear answer to one question: what IELTS score should I aim for?
Your course's English requirement is the place to start. There isn't one admission score for the UK, Canada, Australia or any other country. Even two courses at the same university can ask for different scores.
The examples below give you a starting point for comparing destinations. They also show why you need to check the minimum Writing score, not just the overall band.
IELTS admission requirements at a glance
These are published examples from individual universities, not national requirements. All were checked on 7 October 2026. Follow the link in each row and check your own course before booking a test.
| Country | Institution and scope | Overall | Skill minimums | What it means for Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK | Leeds Beckett: standard undergraduate and taught postgraduate | 6.0 | 5.5 in every skill | At least 5.5; some courses ask for more. |
| UK | Cardiff Metropolitan: courses in its 6.5 category | 6.5 | Reading and Writing 6.5; Listening and Speaking 6.0 | Writing must reach 6.5. |
| Canada | University of Toronto: undergraduate | 6.5 | 6.0 in every skill | Writing must reach 6.0. |
| Australia | Monash: university minimum | 6.5 | 6.0 in every skill | At least 6.0; check for a higher course requirement. |
| USA | University of California: first-year benchmark | 6.5 | Not stated on the system-wide page | Check the campus requirement separately. |
| Ireland | Trinity College Dublin: Band B, most courses | 6.5 | 6.0 in every skill | Writing must reach 6.0. |
| New Zealand | University of Auckland: standard undergraduate | 6.0 | 5.5 in every skill | At least 5.5; check the programme page. |
Notice how much sits beside the overall score. Cardiff Metropolitan and Toronto both ask for 6.5 overall, but their Writing minimums differ by half a band.
United Kingdom
The UK examples show why a general target can mislead. Leeds Beckett's standard requirement is 6.0 overall with each skill at 5.5 or above, and its guidance says some courses ask for more (Leeds Beckett's English language guidance).
Cardiff Metropolitan's 6.5 category asks for 6.5 in both Reading and Writing. For a course in that category, 6.5 overall with Writing 6.0 would fall short (Cardiff Metropolitan's accepted tests).
Some applicants can use a school qualification instead of IELTS. If you have WAEC or WASSCE English, see using WAEC for UK university admission.
For a UK Student visa you also have to show money for your fees and living costs. The UK student visa funds calculator works out how much, and the date it must be in your account from.
Canada
Toronto's undergraduate requirement is 6.5 overall with every band at 6.0 or higher. Don't carry that over to another institution or to a postgraduate programme without checking its own page (University of Toronto's English requirements).
It also helps to keep studying in Canada separate from Canadian immigration. A score discussed for an immigration route may not be what your university requires. For immigration, the IELTS to CLB calculator converts General Training scores, and what your Writing score is worth in CRS points shows what each half band adds. To stay and work after you graduate, the PGWP needs its own IELTS score.
If you're applying for a study permit, writing a letter of explanation covers the letter that goes with it.
Australia
Monash lists a minimum of 6.5 overall and 6.0 in each skill, and says some courses set higher requirements. For research degrees it varies by faculty: Arts, Business and Economics, Education and Law ask for 7.0 overall with 6.5 in every skill, while most other faculties keep 6.5 with 6.0 (Monash's admission requirements, graduate research requirements).
If you're comparing a bachelor's course with a research degree, keep the two requirements in separate notes. A university's general minimum may not be the number you need.
Your student visa application also asks four short Genuine Student questions; how to answer the GS questions shows what to write in each.
If you might stay and apply to migrate later, the English scores for that are different again; see IELTS for Australian skilled migration points.
United States
The University of California lists IELTS 6.5 as its first-year English proficiency benchmark, and says a campus may require a higher score. The system-wide page doesn't give a separate Writing minimum (UC's English proficiency guidance).
That last point is worth checking with the campus directly. A table that lists only an overall score shouldn't lead you to assume there are no other conditions.
Ireland
Trinity College Dublin says most undergraduate and postgraduate courses use its Band B standard: 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band. Other courses use a higher category, so look up the one attached to your programme (Trinity's English language requirements).
"Band B" here is Trinity's admission category. It isn't an IELTS band.
New Zealand
Auckland's standard undergraduate requirement is 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, and each programme page states its own requirement. For comparison, its 2026 postgraduate document lists 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 for programmes including the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (Auckland's undergraduate guidance, 2026 postgraduate requirements).
Use the requirement for your qualification level and programme, not a single "New Zealand IELTS score" from a general list.
Does 6.5 overall mean you have met the requirement?
Only if you also meet every individual minimum.
Listening 7.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 6.5 gives 6.5 overall. It still misses a rule that every band must reach 6.0. Read what "no band below 6.0" means for more examples, or put your own scores into the score requirement checker.
If Writing is already below the minimum, IELTS 6.5 overall but Writing 5.5 covers the questions to ask before paying for another test.
Check admission and visa requirements separately
This guide compares university admission examples. Your visa route may have its own rules about English evidence and accepted tests.
For UK degree-level study, for example, the government says a higher education provider can assess your English itself, but the level must be equivalent to CEFR B2. Ask your university how it will record your English evidence (UK Student visa English guidance).
Before booking, make sure you know the required test version, the overall score, the minimum for each skill and the deadline. Also check whether your university accepts One Skill Retake; the One Skill Retake guide explains why that matters.
If you haven't chosen a test yet, IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL vs Duolingo compares which ones universities and visas accept, and IELTS fees by country lists what the test costs. Most master's applications also ask for a statement of purpose.
Start with a practice answer
Once you know your Writing target, find out where you are now. Write a Task 2 essay in the essay checker for an estimated band on each criterion and the sentences to fix, and practise Task 1 on the Task 1 samples, since the official Writing score covers both tasks. Both give practice estimates, not official results.
