IELTS Writing

What IELTS Writing band 6.0 means

A competent essay: it answers the question and is clear, but ideas are not developed enough and errors are common.

What an examiner sees at 6.0

  • All main parts of the question answered, though some get far less attention than others.
  • Ideas that are relevant but stated rather than explained.
  • Linking words used, but often mechanically (Moreover, Furthermore at the start of every sentence).
  • A mix of simple and complex sentences, with errors in the complex ones.

What usually holds an essay at 6.0

  • General statements instead of explained reasons.
  • A conclusion that repeats the introduction or is unclear.
  • Plain, repeated vocabulary (good, important, problem).

How to reach 6.5

  1. 1

After every idea, add “because” and “for example”, and finish the thought.

  2. 2

Keep one clear position from the introduction to the conclusion.

  3. 3

Use linking words only where the logic changes, and reference words (this, which) elsewhere.

  4. 4

Proofread complex sentences for joining-word errors (although … but, which/who).
