IELTS Task 1 line graph: Renewable electricity in three countries
Line graphAcademic
The question
The graph below shows the percentage of electricity generated from renewable sources in three countries from 2015 to 2025, with projections for 2030 and 2035. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
Electricity from renewable sources (% of total); 2030 and 2035 projected
- Country A
- Country B
- Country C

The plan
Key features for the overview
- Renewables grow in all three countries, at very different speeds.
- B starts highest but barely changes; C grows fastest; A is expected to take the lead by 2035.
How the details are grouped
- 2015 to 2025: the actual figures
- 2030 and 2035: the projections
Model answer
188 wordsThe line graph shows the proportion of electricity produced from renewable sources in three countries between 2015 and 2025, together with forecasts for 2030 and 2035.
Overall, the share of renewable power rises in all three countries, but at very different speeds. Country B begins with the highest figure and changes little, whereas Country C, which starts from almost nothing, is expected to grow the fastest, and Country A is predicted to take the lead by 2035.
In 2015, renewables accounted for 45% of electricity in Country B, more than double the figure for Country A (20%) and nine times that of Country C (5%). Over the following decade, Country B's share crept up by just three percentage points, to 48%, while Country A's climbed steadily to 35%.
The projections suggest that these trends will continue. Country A is forecast to reach 55% by 2035, overtaking Country B, whose share is expected to edge up to only 52%. The most dramatic change, however, is predicted for Country C: its figure tripled to 15% by 2025 and is projected to soar to 50% in 2035, almost matching Country B.

Why it works
- Task Achievement
- Actual figures and projections are kept apart, and the overview says who leads and who grows fastest. Comparisons (“more than double”, “nine times”) do the work that a list of numbers cannot.
- Coherence and Cohesion
- One paragraph for what has happened and one for what is predicted: a natural split for any graph with forecasts. “However” marks the most important change rather than opening every sentence.
- Lexical Resource
- Language for the future is precise and varied: is forecast to, is expected to, is predicted for, is projected to. Trend words match the size of the change: crept up, climbed steadily, soar.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
- Past tenses for 2015–2025 and future forms for the projections, without mixing them up. Accurate relative clauses (“whose share is expected to…”).
Phrases worth reusing
- together with forecasts for
- accounted for 45% of electricity
- crept up by just three percentage points
- is forecast to reach
