OpinionWork
The question
A four-day working week would benefit both employees and employers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Try writing your own answer first, then compare. Reading a model before you write tends to make you copy it.
The plan
Position: Agree for many office jobs, with limits for shift-based services.
- Rested employees are more productive, so output need not fall.
- Employers gain in recruitment and retention; but hospitals and shops need cover, so it cannot be universal.
Model answer
261 wordsIn recent years, several companies have experimented with a four-day working week without reducing pay. I agree that this arrangement would benefit both employees and employers in many sectors, although it cannot be applied to every kind of work.
For employees, the benefits are obvious. An extra day off each week gives people time to rest, look after children or elderly relatives, and deal with tasks that otherwise eat into their evenings. Exhaustion is a major cause of illness and absence, and a longer weekend allows people to return to work refreshed. Crucially, shorter weeks need not mean less work is done: when time is limited, staff tend to cut unnecessary meetings and focus on the tasks that matter most.
Employers also stand to gain. Companies that offer a four-day week find it easier to attract skilled applicants, especially in competitive fields such as technology and finance, where salaries alone no longer set firms apart. Staff who feel trusted and well rested are also less likely to leave, which saves the considerable cost of recruiting and training replacements.
However, the model suits some jobs far better than others. Hospitals, schools and shops must be staffed every day, so a four-day week there would require more employees or complex rotas. In these sectors, more flexible schedules may be a more realistic goal than a shorter week for everyone.
In conclusion, a four-day week can raise wellbeing and productivity at the same time, making it a sensible choice for many office-based employers, even if services that run every day will need different solutions.
