Some people think that big cities offer young people the best start in life, while others believe life in the countryside is better for them. Although rural life has clear advantages, I believe that cities are the better choice for most young adults beginning their careers.

Supporters of rural life emphasise quality of life. In a small town, the rent for a one-bedroom city flat might cover a whole house, so a young couple can save for a deposit instead of handing most of their wages to a landlord. Living near parents also means practical support, from help with childcare to a meal when money runs short, and open countryside offers a calmer pace than crowded streets. For young people who already run a farm or a family business, or who work remotely, these benefits can be decisive.

For most young adults, however, the city offers opportunities that the countryside cannot match. Universities, training colleges and large employers are concentrated in urban areas, and so are the internships and entry-level jobs that start a career. A newly qualified nurse, for example, can choose between several hospitals in a city, while a rural clinic may offer one post that rarely falls vacant. The benefit compounds over time: each early job brings contacts and skills that lead to the next, so a young person who starts in the city often progresses faster for years afterwards. Cities also expose young people to a wider range of people and ideas, which builds the confidence to adapt when careers change.

Of course, city life has costs, particularly high rents and long commutes. But these are easier to bear in one's twenties, before family responsibilities begin, and the skills gained often make a later move to a quieter place possible.

In conclusion, the countryside offers calm and affordability, but the education, careers and experiences available in cities make them the better choice for most young people.
