Work-related stress has become one of the most common reasons for illness and time off. It is caused mainly by heavier workloads and by technology that keeps employees connected to work at all hours, and it can be tackled if employers manage workloads realistically and protect time away from work.

The first cause is the amount of work expected of each person. Many organisations have cut staff to reduce costs without reducing the work to be done, so the remaining employees cover several roles at once. Constant pressure to meet targets, with little control over how the work is organised, is a well-known source of stress. The second cause is that work no longer stays in the office. Smartphones mean that emails and messages arrive in the evening and at weekends, and many employees feel they must reply immediately. Without a clear break, the mind never fully recovers.

Employers are best placed to address both problems. Managers can review workloads regularly and hire extra staff when teams are clearly overstretched, rather than waiting for people to fall ill. Clear policies on after-hours contact, such as not expecting replies to emails sent outside working hours, would give employees genuine time off. Some companies go further and switch off email servers in the evening. Training managers to recognise early signs of stress, such as frequent absence or declining performance, also allows problems to be addressed before they become serious.

Individuals can help themselves through exercise and better sleep, but these cannot compensate for an unmanageable job.

In conclusion, stress at work grows from excessive workloads and constant connection. Realistic workloads and protected rest are the most effective cure, and they also benefit employers through better health and productivity.
