Model answer
307 wordsIn many countries, young people struggle to find their first job even when they are well qualified. The main causes are a lack of work experience and a mismatch between what young people study and what employers need, and both can be addressed through closer links between education and the workplace.
The first cause is a frustrating cycle: employers want experience, but young people cannot gain experience without a job. Many vacancies, even at junior level, ask for one or two years in a similar role, because training a new employee costs time and money. A school leaver or graduate with no track record therefore loses out to older applicants, however capable they may be. The second cause is that education does not always prepare people for the jobs available. Large numbers of students choose popular degrees with few related vacancies, while employers in fields such as engineering, healthcare and skilled trades report that they cannot find enough trained staff.
These causes point to clear solutions. To break the experience cycle, governments could expand paid apprenticeships and work placements, and offer employers tax relief or subsidies for hiring and training young people. A year spent learning a trade or working within a company gives young people both skills and a reference that opens other doors. To reduce the mismatch, schools and universities could provide better careers advice based on real labour market data, and design courses together with local employers, so that students know which skills are in demand before they choose.
Young people can also help themselves through volunteering and part-time work, which show employers reliability and initiative.
In conclusion, youth unemployment stems largely from a lack of experience and a mismatch of skills. Apprenticeships, incentives for employers and education shaped by the job market offer the most practical ways to help young people into work.
