The plan
Position: Mainly positive, because longer lives are an achievement, provided societies adapt work, pensions and care.
- Positive: longer, healthier lives; older people contribute through work, volunteering and family care.
- Negative: pressure on pensions, healthcare and workers; manageable with later, flexible retirement and investment in care.
Model answer
293 wordsIn many countries, older people make up a growing share of the population, as people live longer and families have fewer children. While this trend creates real economic challenges, I believe it is mainly a positive development, provided that societies adapt to it.
The first point to make is that an ageing population reflects a remarkable achievement. People are living longer because of better healthcare, nutrition and living conditions, and many reach their seventies in good health. These extra years are valuable in themselves, and older people contribute far more than is often recognised. Many continue to work, volunteer in their communities or look after grandchildren, which allows parents to stay in employment. Their experience is also an asset in workplaces and public life.
There are, however, serious challenges. Pensions and healthcare are largely funded by the taxes of working people, so when the number of retired people rises faster than the number of workers, the cost of supporting them falls on a shrinking workforce. Health and care services face growing demand, particularly for long-term conditions such as dementia, and some industries may struggle to find enough workers.
These problems are real but manageable. Governments can raise the retirement age gradually in line with life expectancy, while allowing flexibility for people in physically demanding jobs. Investment in preventive healthcare can keep older people healthy for longer, and well-managed immigration can help fill gaps in the workforce. Technology may also reduce the pressure, as automation takes over some routine work.
In conclusion, a population with more older people creates pressure on pensions, care and the workforce. However, because it is the result of longer, healthier lives, and because its challenges can be met through sensible policy, I see it as a largely positive development.

Why it works
- Task Response
