Model answer
265 wordsInternational tourism has grown enormously in recent decades, bringing visitors to places that once saw very few. I believe that for most local communities the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, but only when tourism is carefully managed.
The economic benefits are the most visible. Tourism creates jobs not only in hotels and restaurants but also for local guides, drivers, farmers and craftspeople, many of whom would otherwise struggle to find work in rural areas. Visitors' spending supports small family businesses, and the taxes they generate can fund roads, water supplies and schools. Tourism can also give communities a reason to preserve their heritage, since historic buildings, traditional festivals and natural landscapes become valuable precisely because visitors come to see them.
Yet the costs can be serious. In popular destinations, landlords convert homes into short-term holiday rentals, pushing rents beyond the reach of local families. Crowds can overwhelm small streets and fragile sites, while cruise ships and flights add to pollution. In the worst cases, residents feel like strangers in their own towns, surrounded by businesses that serve tourists rather than local people.
These problems, however, are largely the result of unmanaged growth rather than tourism itself. Cities such as Amsterdam have limited holiday rentals and redirected visitors away from overcrowded areas, while many destinations charge a small tourist tax that funds local services and conservation.
In conclusion, international tourism brings jobs, income and a reason to protect local culture. Its harms, from rising rents to crowding, are real but can be controlled, so for most communities the benefits outweigh the costs when tourism is well managed.
