In some countries, cash has almost disappeared, with most payments made by card or phone. In my view, the advantages of this shift outweigh the disadvantages, as long as people who depend on cash are not left behind.

The benefits of digital payment are considerable. For most consumers it is simply faster and more convenient: there is no need to visit a cash machine or count change, and spending can be tracked easily through a banking app. Businesses save the time and expense of handling, storing and transporting cash, and shops that hold little cash are less attractive targets for robbery. Moreover, electronic payments leave a record, which makes it harder to hide income from the tax authorities or to pay for illegal goods anonymously.

There are, however, real drawbacks. Some older people, people with disabilities and those on very low incomes rely on cash, either because they lack a bank account or because physical money helps them budget. If shops refuse cash, these groups can be shut out of everyday life. A cashless society also raises privacy concerns, since every purchase can be recorded and analysed by banks and technology companies. Finally, when payment systems fail, as occasionally happens during power cuts or technical faults, people may be unable to buy essentials at all.

These risks can be reduced. Governments can require essential services, such as food shops and public transport, to keep accepting cash, and strong privacy laws can limit how payment data is used.

In conclusion, a largely cashless economy is more convenient, safer and harder to cheat. Provided that cash remains available for those who need it, I believe the benefits clearly outweigh the drawbacks.
