The plan
Position: The disadvantages outweigh the advantages for most children, though home education can suit some.
- Advantages: tailored pace, protection from bullying, flexibility for children with special needs.
- Disadvantages: fewer social experiences, uneven teaching quality, heavy demands on parents; these affect most children more.
Model answer
296 wordsA growing number of parents are choosing to educate their children at home rather than send them to school. Although home education offers real benefits for some children, I believe that for most the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
The strongest case for homeschooling is that learning can be tailored to the individual child. A parent teaching one or two children can move quickly through subjects the child finds easy and spend longer on those they find difficult, something a teacher with thirty pupils rarely can. Home education can also protect children who have been badly bullied, or who have conditions such as severe anxiety that make school extremely difficult. For these children, learning at home may be the difference between progress and falling behind altogether.
For most children, however, the drawbacks are more serious. School is not only a place for lessons but also a place where children learn to cooperate with people they did not choose, resolve disagreements and cope with setbacks in front of their peers. Homeschooled children can miss much of this, even when parents arrange clubs and outings. The quality of teaching is also uneven. Few parents have the knowledge to teach advanced science, mathematics and languages, and there is often little inspection to ensure that children are learning what they need. Finally, home education places heavy demands on parents, usually requiring one of them to give up paid work.
These problems affect the majority of families who might consider homeschooling, while its benefits apply most clearly to a smaller group of children with particular needs.
In conclusion, home education can be the right choice for children who struggle at school for specific reasons. For most children, though, the social learning and specialist teaching that schools provide make school the better option.

Nowadays, more and more parents decide to teach their children at home instead of sending them to school. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling and give my opinion.
There are some advantages of homeschooling. Firstly, parents can teach their children in their own way and at their own speed. If the child is good at maths, the parent can teach more maths. Secondly, children are safe at home and they do not have problem with bullying. Thirdly, the family can travel together at any time because they do not need to follow the school holidays. This is very good for the family.
On the other hand, there are also many disadvantages. Children who study at home do not have many friends, because they do not meet other children every day. This is bad for their social skill. Also, many parents are not teachers, so they do not know how to teach difficult subject like physics or chemistry. Moreover, one parent must stay at home all day, so the family will have less money. It is also very tiring for parents to be teacher and parent at the same time, and some of them become stressed.
In my opinion, the disadvantages of homeschooling are more than the advantages. Children need to go to school to make friends and to learn from professional teachers. School is also good for prepare children for the future.
In conclusion, homeschooling has advantages and disadvantages, but I believe that the disadvantages are bigger because children need friends and good teachers.
What holds it back
- The verdict is clear only near the end, and the reasons for it are asserted rather than weighed.
- Points are listed, not developed: “do not have many friends” never explains what children miss.
- A minor point (travelling at any time) takes space from stronger arguments.
- Grammar slips: “do not have problem”, “social skill”, “difficult subject”, “good for prepare”.
- “The disadvantages are more than the advantages” is an awkward way of saying “outweigh”.
