IELTS Task 2 sample essay: Spending on Space Exploration

DiscussionGovernment and society

The question

Some people think money spent on space exploration is wasted, while others believe it brings important benefits. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The plan

Position: Space exploration is worth funding, at a modest share of budgets, because its benefits reach everyday life.

  • View A: money is needed for poverty, health and climate on Earth now.
  • View B and my view: space research produced satellites, weather forecasting and technologies we rely on, and costs relatively little.

Space exploration is one of the most expensive activities a government can fund, and opinions differ on whether it is worth the cost. Some consider it a waste of money that should be spent on problems at home, while others believe it brings important benefits. I side with the second view, provided spending remains a modest part of national budgets.

Critics of space programmes raise a serious moral point. While millions of people lack clean water, healthcare or decent housing, spending billions to send probes to distant planets can seem hard to justify. From this perspective, governments have a duty to solve urgent problems on Earth first, and space exploration is a luxury that can wait until those needs are met. Some also argue that private companies, rather than taxpayers, should bear the cost of exploration if they hope to profit from it.

However, the benefits of space research are far more practical than they first appear. Satellites, which exist because of space programmes, now provide weather forecasts that save lives during storms, navigation systems used by every smartphone and the communications that connect remote regions to the internet. Satellite images are also among the most important tools scientists use to monitor deforestation, melting ice and other effects of climate change. Many technologies developed for space missions, from water purification systems to improved medical imaging, have found everyday uses.

It is also worth noting that space budgets are usually small compared with spending on health, education or defence, so cutting them would do little to solve poverty.

In conclusion, although urgent needs on Earth deserve priority, space exploration is not wasted money. Its practical benefits, from weather forecasting to climate research, justify continued investment at a sensible level.
